Router Security: TÜViT Recognized as an Inspection Body for BSI TR-03148

TÜViT is permitted from now on to carry out corresponding tests of broadband routers.

It's official – with immediate effect: TÜV Informationstechnik GmbH has been officially approved as an inspection body for BSI TR-03148 and is permitted from now on to carry out corresponding tests of broadband routers.

As the interface between the Internet and private networks, broadband routers represent the epicenter of a potential cyber attack. Once they have managed to enter the network via the router, cybercriminals can spread out unchecked within it and gain access to connected devices or sensitive data and information. As a consequence, they are an attractive target for hacker attacks.

For this reason, the IT security of routers is of crucial importance, which is taken into account within the framework of BSI TR-03148. The “Secure Broadband Router” Technical Guideline specifies fundamental security requirements for common broadband routers that are used in private households or micro-enterprises. In doing so, the guideline addresses both the core functionalities of the router and network management with the aim of securing the device in a manner that makes it as resistant to attacks as possible.

First and foremost, BSI TR-03148 is aimed at router manufacturers who would like to test the security of their devices and provide evidence of this by means of a certificate. However, end users also benefit from this: when considering a new purchase, they will be able to obtain more information in the future about the state of the art of the device they prefer. Testing and certification in accordance with TR-03148 thereby ensures transparency for consumers, while at the same time increasing confidence in the manufacturer on the market.

With immediate effect, TÜViT will be carrying out tests according to BSI TR-03148 and accompanying router manufacturers on their way to successful certification by the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI). Furthermore, TÜViT – as an IT security service provider – was actively involved in the development of the Technical Guideline in advance as part of the Router TG Working Group.
