Together with Deutsche Telekom, TÜV Informationstechnik GmbH (TÜVIT) has developed an IT security evaluation concept for nuSIM. nuSIM is a new type of solution from Deutsche Telekom and partners for cost-effective IoT devices. The idea behind it is that the SIM functionality is integrated directly into the chipset.

Traditional SIM cards have a wide range of functions that are largely unneeded in the IoT environment. The motto for the future is “Less is more”. Combined with the direct integration of SIM functions into the chipset, nuSIM now offers the capability of lowering costs in development and manufacturing, and for the end customer.

However, it is important that the existing security level of conventional SIM cards is maintained. In cooperation with TÜV Informationstechnik, Deutsche Telekom has therefore created a nuSIM evaluation concept, allowing the demanding security requirements to be tested. “Furthermore, the nuSIM evaluation concept facilitates the certification of the solution under the ‘trusted product certification program’ (level SEAL 4) from TÜViT,” explains Dr Patrick Bödeker, Head of the Hardware Evaluation department at TÜV Informationstechnik GmbH. In doing so, the security of the solution can be demonstrated to the operators of mobile communications networks.
