The co-designer of the future: looking towards the safe quantum age
Early preparation for the quantum age is extremely important. Sven Bettendorf knows this too and is already working on the IT security of tomorrow.

I am working on the transition from traditional security methods to those suitable for the post-quantum era. My work involves evaluating and researching solutions that provide long-term security. This includes new algorithms that run on classical computers as well as completely new methods based on quantum technologies. I am involved in establishing new standards, developing new test procedures and acting as a central point of contact for these topics.
During my studies, I was already intensively involved with post-quantum cryptography. My interest in technology and security has been a constant companion throughout my academic career. Now I find it extremely exciting to be able to play an active role in shaping the future of IT security. I am particularly fascinated by quantum-based technologies and their far-reaching impact, not only on IT security.
The urgency to drive the shift to post-quantum cryptography (PQC) is a key aspect of my work. Many are still unaware of the threat posed by quantum computing and are not sufficiently concerned with its potential impact. It is a challenging and lengthy task to make the case that the transition to PQC methods should already have begun. Taking on this challenge and raising awareness is a central part of my work.
My work also involves dealing with the constant flood of information that arises from the early stage of development in the field of PQC and Quantum Key Distribution (QKD). Numerous reports appear every day, both important and less relevant. A key part of my job is to filter this news and identify the important topics. In doing so, I assess their relevance to our area of expertise and ensure that we focus on the key developments. This task is crucial in order to keep our finger on the pulse and respond appropriately to the dynamic changes in the world of IT security.
Throughout my work, I mainly focus on the challenges and negative impacts that the new age of quantum technology brings. However, it is important to remember that quantum technologies also offer a wealth of possibilities and opportunities to make significant progress in many different areas. Of course, it would be nice to already know which technologies will prevail. At the moment, there are still many unresolved issues and problems.
Prepare for the post-quantum era as soon as possible. It is crucial to start early, because the transition phase should not be underestimated, nor should the duration for which secrets should actually remain protected. That's why it's important to start focussing on this topic now and ideally develop a plan for the transition.
